How to Be a Better Lover: Five Habits to Practice

Being a better lover means paying attention to what she enjoys, talking openly and accepting her preferences without pressure. It also includes affection that doesn’t have to lead to sex. Sex is a Skill develops five habits over thirty days: noticing her responses, taking initiative, managing your own arousal, showing desire without pressure and staying present.

What Makes a Better Lover: The Five Signs

These five habits describe what you do with your partner, during sex and outside it. The program gives you specific practices for each one.

  1. You read her and adapt.Notice her breathing, movements and words. Adjust when her response changes, and ask if you’re unsure what she wants.
  2. You guide, and there is no ego in it.Take initiative while making it easy for her to slow down, suggest something else or stop. Leading works best when you’re both comfortable with it.
  3. You manage your own arousal. The point isn’t lasting longer for its own sake: a man who isn’t fighting off his own climax has attention left over for her.
  4. She feels wanted, not pressured. This one shows up outside sex: whether you touch her on the days you aren’t asking for anything.
  5. You stay in it. Not narrating the evening to yourself while it happens, not checking how it is going, not already deciding what your hands do next.

You can practice all five, starting with how you talk to each other. For more on what helps during sex, see our guide to how to be better in bed for men.

Six Practices That Separate a Good Lover From a Better One

Each practice belongs to a day of the program and gives you something to try with your partner.

01Lead
Try a comfortable rhythm, keep the pressure steady and leave room for her to guide you. Taking initiative and listening can happen together.
02Invite
Ask for what you want as a question she can say yes or no to. It asks for the same thing an instruction would, without making her feel told.
03Answer
Accept a no without bargaining or sulking. Thank her for telling you, and let the evening continue without expecting her to change her mind.
04Mirror
She scratches your back; you trace the same line on her thigh. You’re passing the touch back, not copying it.
05Vary
Gentle and bold in the same evening, so the night isn’t a routine.
06Stay
Let the evening unfold without needing a particular result. You can enjoy being close even if the plan changes.

How to Become a Better Lover: Start With What You Say

Talking about sex is easier when neither of you feels criticized or pressured. A small change in how you ask can make your meaning clearer and give her room to respond.

The fix is not a script. It’s a swap. “No, not like that” becomes “Mmm… slower. Just like that.” “Move your hand” becomes “Can I guide you?”, and then you guide it. The information in each pair is the same. What changes is whether she has just been corrected or invited.

The same approach helps when you want to try something new. “Can I show you something I’ve been fantasizing about?” makes your interest clear while leaving her free to say yes or no.

If she says no, accept it without bargaining or sulking. “That’s okay, thanks for telling me” is enough. She doesn’t owe you a different answer later.

These small changes in wording are easy to remember. Saying them naturally may take practice.

Generic Advice vs What You Do

Before

Communicate more, in general, at some point.
Hint, and hope she offers.
Save the affection for the evenings that are going somewhere.
Push once more, or go quiet for two days.

After

Take initiative while listening to what she wants.
Ask for what you want as an invitation, out loud.
Reach for her on an evening when nothing is going to happen.
Take a no in one sentence, and mean it.

Technique covers what your hands do; the rest is how you behave with her.

Why Being a Better Lover Is More Than Better Technique

Four things the thirty days keep returning to, none of which is a move.

Affection matters outside sex.

Day twenty-seven is about what makes her want you: steadiness, a little surprise, and being wanted for something other than sex. No pickup hacks, no text-her-this advice, no scripts.

Leading is not controlling.

The line between them is whether she can still change what happens next. A man who leads well is easier to interrupt, not harder.

Your own body is part of it.

Day twenty-three maps yours — perineum, inner thighs, lower abs, nipples, neck. A man who knows what he enjoys beyond the obvious is less fixed on one outcome, and has more attention left for her.

How you leave her is part of it.

The time after sex matters too. Stay attentive to whether she wants closeness, conversation or space. Find practical ideas in our guide to sex aftercare.

How to Become a Better Lover for Her: A Thirty-Day Plan

Sex is a Skill is The Coach’s thirty-day program on her pleasure. It isn’t a library to browse: you get one practice an evening, in a fixed order.

Twenty-two days in, the lessons turn to you.

That order is deliberate: the last eight days build on everything before them.

What Men Reported After Four Weeks

From a survey of The Coach users who finished their first four weeks:

58%
Felt more in control during sex
55%
Said sex became much more satisfying
39%
Reported a higher libido
41%
Had sex more often

Those numbers come from four weeks of practice.

Short practices, on ordinary evenings.

Men Who Stopped Trying to Impress Her

Left as they were written on the App Store and Google Play, trimmed only for length.

“After only five or six lessons, I was tuned in to making the experience more pleasurable for her, which actually made me feel sexier! I’m not ashamed to admit that the Coach made me a better partner and lover.”

TWCP3

“I am grateful for the reminders and techniques to enhance and revitalize my love for my wife. Technique that makes you own the confidence that you’re doing the right stuff. Anatomy that we forgot about and sensory stuff that makes her squirm. Thank you”

“There’s a couple of uses for the app, but I liked how organized the section was on ‘Sex is a Skill.’ It has professionally drawn sketches to help you understand what is being described without looking graphic or distasteful. It has helped me up my game in the bedroom and I’m happy with my results!”

Etoyota

“At 61 years old I thought I knew a lot about female anatomy and sex, it turns out I was WRONG! While I have been quite successful in helping women reach orgasm in the past, it turns out it was more from luck than any skill on my part.”

How to Be a Better Lover: The Questions Men Ask

What actually makes a better lover?

Five things: you read her and adapt, you guide without ego, you handle your own arousal, she feels wanted rather than pressured, and you stay present instead of performing. Every one of them is a behavior, which is why it can be trained. None of them is a position, a duration or a trick.

Can I work on this without a partner?

Not most of it. Twenty-eight of the thirty practices are written for two people in a room — the reading, the leading, the asking, the mirroring. Day one opens with two steps you do on your own and day twenty-six is a solo rewrite of your own script, but the habits above are learned with someone.

How long before she notices anything?

A word swap can land the first evening you use it; she hears the difference in the moment. The rest is slower: the survey figures come from four weeks of practice, and the program is thirty days long.

Is this about sex, or about the relationship?

Both, in that order. The material is sexual — anatomy, oral, penetration, arousal — and the last week is about how you lead, ask, and leave her. What it never becomes is dating advice: no texting scripts, no games, nothing to send her.

What if leading like that feels fake?

Trying something unfamiliar can feel awkward. Start with one small change and talk to her about it. You don’t need to act like a different person or hide that you’re learning.

How do I get in touch?

Two ways. Email support@the.coach and a real person on our team gets back to you — usually within a day. Or open the app, go to the Today tab, tap your profile, and hit Support. Both reach the same team.
